arclay ceramics
architecture + clay

Quiet objects,
made by hand.

Arclay is a ceramics studio founded by the architect Lin Liu in Jingdezhen — porcelain tea ware and objects for the home, where architectural order meets the language of nature.

The Brand

Architecture,
in clay.

arclay was founded in Jingdezhen in 2022 by the architect Lin Liu. The name joins two words — architecture and clay — and the work lives in the space between them: the order and structure of building, set beside the feeling and language of nature.

Through ceramic art, arclay explores the quiet relationship between people and the environments they live in. Each collection begins with one architectural idea drawn from the natural world, and grows into objects for the tea table and the home — made by hand, in Jingdezhen, the thousand-year home of Chinese porcelain.

01

Architecture + clay

Founded by an architect, Arclay places the order of building beside the emotion of nature — structure and feeling, in one vessel.

02

Made by hand in Jingdezhen

Thrown, cast, polished and glazed by hand and high-fired — porcelain that is dense, resonant and made to last.

03

Limited & one of a kind

Each collection is made in small numbers, and no two pieces leave the kiln quite alike. When a piece is gone, it's gone.

The Artist

Lin Liu 刘琳

Lin Liu trained as an architect long before she worked in clay — a Master of Architecture from Tsinghua University, followed by years practising as an architect in Germany. Arclay is where those two lives meet: the precision of the drawing board and the patience of the kiln.

She now lives and works between Jingdezhen and Madrid, translating the order of architecture into objects you can hold — each series a study of how built form and the natural world speak to one another.

Collections

Architecture & nature,
from micro to macro.

The arclay series read as a single arc — from the smallest mark to the widest field: point, surface, volume, field. Each takes one architectural idea from the natural world and works it in clay.

Moss collection

Moss

Point · moss in the wall corner

Inspired by moss creeping over a white wall. Hand-painted engobe blooms like ink, while wood-ash glaze flows and crystallises into tiny "golden flowers." Our largest collection — tea ware, tableware, vases and lamps.

Shadow collection

Shadow

Surface · plant shadows on a concrete wall

Dappled light falling on city concrete, caught in abstract ink-brush strokes. Hand-polished through seven stages and left 10–15% porous, so each piece "breathes" and grows its own patina with tea and time.

Fold collection

Fold

Volume · the architect's origami study model

An architect's folded-paper language, shrunk to fit the hand. Forms begin from the grip and follow it into ergonomic folded planes. Black-and-white porcelain with iron-glaze and paper-pulp variants — texture you only read by touch.

Flow

Field · the flowing earth

Light through clay. Rechargeable tea-table ambient lamps, oil lamps and candle holders whose glow moves across the room as the evening turns — warmth you can set down anywhere.
